Cornwall home to the best wild camping location in the UK

Wild camping in Cornwall

Cornwall has the best 'wild' camping spot in the UK, according to an independent study that has ranked hundreds of off-grid locations around the UK as holidaymakers plan their summer breaks. The inaugural Best Almost Wild Camping Index by Camplify UK, one of the largest and most trusted campervan and motorhome sharing communities globally, lists hundreds of off-grid locations around the UK to help holidaymakers embrace the outdoors and get closer to nature.

The index exclusively analysed remote locations and their proximity to beaches, national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, top attractions, as well as the functional facilities available on-site – allowing holidaymakers and honeymooners to ditch crowded campsites in favour of peace and tranquillity.

With two locations ranking in the top 10, Cornwall is among the best-performing counties nationwide for off-grid adventures, reigning above West Sussex, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and more. Crowan Beacon Farm in Burras ranks the highest – both in Cornwall and nationwide – thanks to its position within a haven of wildlife, the volume of beaches within easy reach, and amount of attractions within a short drive. Home to friendly flocks of Herdwick and rare-breed North Ronaldsay Sheep, this ancient and special place is located in the heart of Cornwall. The location of the pitch is adjacent to Crowan Beacon, which is known as a haven for wildlife, and a short drive from the National Trust’s Godolphin, Penrose and East Pool Mine. With 40 beaches within 20 miles of the site, guests are spoilt for choice on where to spend their days.

Atlantic View in Week Saint Mary follows in second position for the county, ranking fourth overall. Elsewhere in the country, the index saw Devon and Kent perform well, landing four and three locations in the top 20 respectively. Ann Jarvis, head of community and owners at Camplify UK, comments: "Taking to the open road and experiencing van life is an incredibly fulfilling experience, and there's no better way to do it than finding a peaceful pitch that will help you truly connect with nature. "Except Scotland and parts of Dartmoor National Park, you need to plan if you'd like to get off-grid in the UK – so we created this index to help adventure-seekers find the best spots that offer a peaceful and quiet place to pitch that will fully immerse you in nature, located on bookable private land with welcoming hosts. With so many beautiful areas, fascinating attractions, and beaches around the South West, it's no surprise that the area came out on top!"
