Cornwall-based Sara Price Celebrant offers top tips for sustainable weddings

Sustainable flower arrangements

Cornwall-based Sara Price Celebrant offers top tips for hosting a wow-factor sustainable and eco-friendly wedding. Sara tells us, "Most of us have become more aware that we should try to do more to be sustainable and eco-friendly, and couples planning their weddings are no different." Sara adds, "Some of my top suggestions include picking plants instead of flowers. Using potted plants instead of imported cut flowers will save on air miles and cost, and the plants could be given to key people as thank you gifts."

Sara also explains how another alternative is to choose garden flowers. "Arrange them in vases, jugs, bottles and decanters from charity shops, or hire from companies who will deliver them and collect them again afterwards," she says.

Hire your wedding dress, or buy a pre-loved one. Sara says, "For what is probably the most important day of your life, a stunning wedding dress is a must. If you haven't considered this before, wedding dress hire companies or shops selling pre-loved gowns may surprise you with the range and quality they have available and are worth a look."

Sara also suggests making your wedding favours worthwhile. "Sadly, I see so many wedding favours left behind on the tables after a reception, all of which will end up in the bin and go to landfill. Giving guests something to eat or drink, which could be homemade, is a great idea and rarely gets left on the table. Small bottles of your wedding cocktail along with the recipe, handmade chocolates and wedding biscuits are great ideas, as are festival-style plastic tumblers or Cornish mugs. Keep your table decorations simple. Tables are usually decorated with place settings, glasses, candles, flowers, decor, favours and bottles of wine and water. Some are necessary, some not so much, so think carefully about how you would like your tables to look."
