New research by Adventure Connections, a leading provider of group adventure experiences, reveals a staggering increase in the cost of stag and hen weekends, with prices skyrocketing in recent years. The data, based on bookings between 2016 and 2024, highlights a significant financial burden for those celebrating upcoming nuptials.

Stag and Hen Do Costs Outpace Inflation
The average cost of a stag weekend has surged by 136% since 2016, rising from £2,018 to £4,759 in 2024. This represents a substantial increase of approximately 11.32% per year, far outpacing the rate of inflation during the same period. Similarly, hen do expenses have climbed by 130%, increasing from £1,752 to £4,022 over the same period, with an average annual increase of around 11%. This is based just on UK staycation trips alone.

Why Are Stag and Hen Do Costs Rising So Rapidly?
The surge in stag and hen do costs is driven by several factors. Social media has significantly influenced destination choices, with popular locations often going viral and becoming highly sought-after. This increased demand for specific destinations has driven up prices for accommodation, activities, and other associated costs, both domestically and internationally.

Additionally, the UK's inflation rate has risen significantly in recent years, contributing to increased costs across the board. This, combined with the rising popularity of stag and hen dos, has led to higher prices for accommodation, activities, and entertainment. The weakening pound has also impacted the cost of overseas trips, with travellers facing higher expenses for flights, accommodation, and spending money.

The Social Media Effect
Social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, have amplified expectations for stag and hen dos. Viral videos showcasing lavish, meticulously planned events have set a new standard, encouraging groups to go bigger and more extravagant. A survey by WeddingWire revealed that 57% of couples admitted to being influenced by social media when planning their weddings.

This phenomenon has led to a culture where a simple night out is no longer enough; instead, multi-day events with premium accommodations, high-end activities, and elaborate themes are becoming the norm.

The Financial Burden
As costs continue to rise, there is growing concern about the financial strain these events place on attendees. A recent survey highlighted that the average cost per person for a stag or hen party now exceeds £1,500, with accommodation, activities, and food and drink making up the bulk of the expenses. This has sparked debates about the sustainability of such trends, with many questioning whether the price tag is worth it.

The Impact
These dramatic price increases are forcing couples and their friends to reconsider traditional stag and hen do plans. Destinations are becoming more budget-conscious, with a shift away from extravagant city breaks and towards domestic options or more affordable locations. Additionally, group sizes are shrinking as individuals struggle to meet the rising costs.

Future Forecast
The data projects a concerning trend, with costs expected to continue rising if the current trajectory holds. Research by Adventure Connections has predicted that, based on an average year on year increase of 11.32% per year, average stag do costs could reach a staggering £9,056 by 2030 and hen dos to hit £7,633.

Justin Sayers, CEO of Adventure Connections, states: “As the cost of living continues to rise, couples are becoming more conscious of their spending, especially when it comes to celebrating their last hurrah before marriage. At Adventure Connections, we believe that creating unforgettable memories doesn’t have to break the bank. We’ve seen a growing trend towards UK staycations, where groups can enjoy unique and adventurous experiences right on their doorstep without the hefty price tag that could be associated with international travel.”

As the landscape of pre-wedding celebrations evolves, Adventure Connections remains committed to helping couples craft memorable, affordable experiences that prioritise connection and adventure, ensuring every stag and hen do is a celebration to cherish without the financial stress.
